A doula is something that I have been my whole life.
A doula is someone that works as a conduit…..supporting a person through a process. As a birth doula, a doula acts as support through the spectrum of pregnancy and eventually through the actual experience of birth.
But I believe there are all kinds of doulas.
We act as doulas everyday: to our parents, our siblings, our partners, our friends, our children and our communities.
As a doula we support access to information, the getting and receiving of information that is needed to complete a task. As a doula we give loving support and we hold hands and we share the brunt of an experience the best we can.
As a doula we find out as much information as we can to support our community so we can support moving forward with the best possible outcome.
We don’t judge….or at least when we do, we know enough to keep it to ourselves because we know that this is about your experience and not ours.
On both an individual and collective level, a doula is a conduit for change; working to combat the violence of birth, life, death and experience.
